When a Student's Actions Leave a Teacher Fuming
An Unruly and Disruptive Classroom Environment
Nothing can deflate a teacher's confidence more than a student who behaves poorly in class. Recently, there was a boy who was always up to no good in one of my classes. He would pass notes during lectures, make silly faces at his classmates, and even talk back to me when I tried to discipline him. His antics only served to create a disruptive and unruly classroom environment that affected the entire class, as they either got distracted or frustrated by his behavior. The situation was getting out of hand, and I knew I needed to take action.Conversations with the Boy and His Parents
After several failed attempts to get the student to behave and under different strategies, I decided to have a one-on-one conversation with him. I asked him why he was acting out and even suggested that he might be struggling with some personal issues that were affecting his behavior in class. The boy denied any personal problems, saying that he was just bored and didn't see the point of school. I explained to him that his actions were not only impacting his own learning but also that of his classmates. I also talked to his parents about his behavior, and while they were supportive, they didn't have any solutions to offer. It was clear that the boy's behavior was going to continue to be a problem unless drastic measures were taken.Punishments and Consequences
After trying multiple times to get the boy to behave appropriately, I finally decided to implement a consequence system. Every time he disrupted the class, he would lose out on a privilege (like playing a game at recess), and for every three strikes, he would face a more severe punishment. While in the beginning, it seemed to be working, the boy soon learned how to manipulate the system to his advantage. He would misbehave just enough to lose a minor privilege, but not enough to earn a more severe punishment. It was at this point that I knew the problem was beyond me, and that professional help was needed. As a teacher, seeing a student misbehave incessantly can be incredibly frustrating and exhausting. However, through understanding, conversations, and even interventions, we can work towards a common goal - creating a more conducive and positive learning environment for all students. It is never too late to address the situation and to try something new that may help the student feel more engaged, focused, and motivated at school.
